A music magazine is a magazine dedicated to music and music culture. such magazines typically include music news, interviews, photo shoots, essays, record reviews, concert reviews and occasionally have a covermount with recorded music.
Indie- Indie music magazines are all about Indie music. They sometimes include Indie fashion and often they only include one artist on the front cover. The masthead usually would be red, blue or black. Indie music originates from rock music and so it can be similar but Indie music has a more niche audience. The artist on the front usually shows a rebellion attitude with their facial expression. Props are normally used on the front such as guitars maybe the artists smashing the guitars however some magazines try to show the quirky sides of musicians. There is a lot of cover lines dotted around the cover to show that there is a lot to offer inside the magazine. They use younger artists on the front to grasp their target audience which is from 15-30.
Pop- A pop magazine has articles about pop artists and their music etc. They can include celebrity gossip, hair and makeup tips and the latest fashion trends. They usually use colours of Pink, Purple and yellow or bright colours to make the magazine stand out. The cover usually has a female artist on the front because more girls buy the magazine than boys, so they use female artist to relate to the target audience of the magazine, someone who girls may look up to. As pop magazines are usually aimed at children aged between 7-13 they use artists on the front who a younger audience like and know, artists that they are familiar with. The magazine uses a lot of photos on the front cover to show the people who are buying the magazine what is included inside. The language in a pop magazine is very informal and uses colloquial language to engage with the audience.
Rock- Rock magazines consist of rock artists and are all about rock music. The colour scheme of rock magazines is usually red, gold, silver, black and grey; they use more masculine colours. The covers usually only consist of one person. If they have a band then only the most famous/well known member(s) will be on the cover. The clothing of the artist used on the cover would be dark and they may look like they have an attitude or they will have a serious expression on their face. Rock magazines sometimes use props such as musical instruments like guitars and drums etc. The artist may be shown smashing up a guitar or whatever prop is being used.
